Professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and a specialist in dermatovenereology. He was a visiting scientist 1980-1 U Washington, KK Holmes, working on N gonorrhoea and 1984-5 Harvard U, MS Hirsch, on HIV serology and antivirals. He has been responsible for a clinic dedicated to STI and HIV primarily in MSM since 1982. Secretary to the National AIDS committee 1985-8 and co-organiser of the 4th International AIDS Conference 1988. He has been a counterpart to scientists in Dar es Salaam since 1992. This led to a coordinating role in an EU funded preventive HIV vaccine programme, HIVIS, that is now followed by 2 EDCTP funded HIV vaccine trials in Tanzania and Mozambique. Author of more than 100 peer reviewed articles primarily on STIs and N gonorrhoea and lately focusing on HIV immunity and vaccines in the African context.
